Bespoke Landscape Redesign
The starting point:
Mr. and Mrs. Green approached JG Paving and Landscaping with a vision of transforming their underutilised outdoor space into a functional and visually appealing extension of their home. Their property had a large, overgrown garden with little structure or usability. They were unsure of how to make the most of their available space and needed expert guidance to bring their ideas to life. Their primary goals were to create a welcoming back garden, improve drainage, and develop a stunning courtyard that would serve as an entertainment area.
Understanding their needs, we worked closely with them to design a layout that balanced aesthetics, practicality, and longevity. From the initial consultation to the final touches, our team provided comprehensive planning, material selection, and execution to ensure every detail aligned with their vision.

Backyard makeover:
The back garden was designed to create a visually appealing yet highly functional space that could be enjoyed year-round.
- Paving & Drainage Solutions: Given the existing layout, proper drainage was a top priority. We carefully adjusted the ground levels and implemented drainage solutions to prevent water pooling near the house. Indian sandstone paving was selected for its durability and timeless look, complemented by a block paving border for definition. To add an extra design element, we arranged the paving at a 45-degree angle in the corner, creating a dynamic and engaging aesthetic.

- Feature Design: To break up the large paved area and introduce an eye-catching focal point, we crafted a circular cut-out within the paving, bordered with blocks. This provided a striking contrast while defining different zones within the space.

- Structural Enhancements: Railway sleepers were installed in a curved formation, carefully cut to varying heights to follow the natural slope of the garden. These sleepers not only served as a functional boundary but also enhanced the garden’s structure and added depth to the design.

- Green Enhancements: Fresh turf was supplied and professionally laid to introduce a soft, inviting lawn area. To enclose the space while maintaining an open and welcoming feel, we installed a charming picket fence with gates, adding a traditional and homely touch.

Courtyard & garden vision:
The clients had a vision of a walled garden but were unsure how to make the most of such a large area. Our team provided creative solutions to maximise functionality while maintaining an inviting and cohesive look.
- Overcoming Design Challenges: The size of the space posed a challenge in terms of ensuring balance and avoiding vast empty areas. To create purpose-driven zones, we proposed an outdoor kitchen and dining area, seamlessly integrating the courtyard with the home’s daily activities.
- Outdoor Kitchen & Entertainment Area: The kitchen was designed with convenience in mind, positioned strategically to serve as an entertainment hub. It was fitted with running water and electrical points to support cooking appliances and lighting, ensuring usability both day and night.

- Architectural Features: A standout design element of the courtyard was the bespoke Moon Gate, built into the walled garden as a unique entryway from the driveway. This circular structure not only framed the space beautifully but also added an element of exclusivity and artistry. Additionally, a twisted pier was built to support the kitchen’s roof, further enhancing the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.

- Pathways & Water Management: To provide a natural flow through the space, we designed a block-paved path leading from the front door to the Moon Gate, preventing the courtyard from feeling like one large paved expanse. Drainage solutions were also incorporated into the courtyard design, ensuring effective water runoff and preventing pooling during heavy rain.
- Natural Accents: A water feature was carefully positioned in the corner, surrounded by staggered paving and ground cover planting. This created a serene focal point that added movement and tranquility to the space. To enhance the overall atmosphere, a magnificent 200-year-old olive tree was planted as the centrepiece of the courtyard. Uplighting was installed around the tree and throughout the courtyard to highlight its beauty and extend the usability of the space into the evening.

Final outcome:
The completion of this project marked a significant transformation of Mr. and Mrs. Green’s outdoor space. What was once an overgrown and underutilised garden became a bespoke, functional, and visually stunning retreat. The combination of high-quality materials, structural enhancements, and creative landscaping solutions resulted in an outdoor area that seamlessly blended practicality with luxury.
The clients were thrilled with the results, particularly the attention to detail and craftsmanship evident in every aspect of the project. Their new backyard now serves as a relaxing space for everyday use, while the courtyard provides an elegant setting for entertaining guests. The integration of architectural features, lighting, and greenery ensures that the space remains inviting and beautiful throughout the seasons.
