Transforming Dale Farm with a Rustic Brick Wall

At Dale Farm, we replaced an unmanageable Leylandii hedge with a beautifully crafted rustic red brick wall, built on stepped foundations to suit the sloping terrain.

The starting point: overgrown and unmanageable

Dale Farm in Dereham faced a significant challenge: an overgrown Leylandii hedge that not only dominated the space but also posed maintenance issues.

The client sought a clean, durable, and aesthetically pleasing solution to replace the hedge while ensuring the new feature blended seamlessly with the natural surroundings of the farm..

Our goal: A durable and timeless feature

The objective was to remove the Leylandii hedge and create a robust, visually appealing brick wall that:

  1. Enhanced the farm’s rustic charm.
  2. Managed the sloping terrain effectively.
  3. Provided a low-maintenance, long-lasting solution.

How we brought the vision to life

Hedge and root removal

The project began with the removal of the overgrown Leylandii hedge. This included excavating the stumps and roots to prepare the area for construction and ensure a stable foundation.

Foundations designed for the terrain

Given the sloping nature of the site, we laid stepped concrete foundations to accommodate the hill, ensuring the wall would be structurally sound and level along its length.

Rustic red brick wall construction

  • A rustic red brick wall was built, carefully set out to align with the farm’s aesthetic and the surrounding landscape.
  • The design incorporated three piers for added stability and character, ensuring the wall’s durability over time.
  • An inconspicuous expansion joint was added to allow for natural movement and prevent cracking, maintaining the wall’s integrity and appearance.

Finishing Touches

To cap off the project, the wall was topped with Norfolk red half-round wall copings, creating a classic and polished finish that complements the rustic charm of the bricks.

The transformation: clean, functional, and charming

The finished wall seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings of Dale Farm, offering a clean and low-maintenance boundary solution. Its design not only enhances the farm’s aesthetic but also provides a lasting, durable feature that addresses the challenges of the sloping terrain.

What Dale Farm had to say...

"We had planned to replace a worn out hedge with a fence as Jamie has done an excellent job of replacing our fences over the last ten years. However Jamie suggested a brick wall would be a more appropriate solution as it is our street frontage and would enhance the street presence of our property. Jamie helped us choose and source suitable bricks, coping stones and design of brick piers together with introducing a block paved entrance. The work was carried out to an excellent standard and is now much admired by many passers by on our busy street!"
